Brand strategy means answering "who are we" in the language of decisions rather than marketing. Until you decide which work you will not take on, it is hard to explain the work you do take on.

The work begins with positioning: to whom, with what promise, against which alternatives. A message architecture follows — the core promise, supporting themes and proof. That skeleton then underpins everything from the website to ad copy.

In Cyprus much of the work arrives through recommendation, which means a brand has to survive being passed on by word of mouth. A complicated position does not travel. So we push the output until your customer can describe you in a single sentence.

Positioning is not built in isolation from competitors. A promise chosen without looking at what similar firms say usually turns out to be another version of what everyone says: "quality service", "customer-focused approach". Differentiation is found where nobody in the category has planted a flag but customers still care.

Tone of voice is positioning translated into everyday language. The same promise delivered formally, warmly or technically leaves a different impression of the brand. When tone is not written down, whoever writes each piece uses their own voice and the brand shifts from channel to channel.

Strategy that is not handed to the internal team stays on the shelf. When the sentences used in a sales call, the wording of proposals and the answers given on the phone do not come from the same skeleton, customers meet a different brand in each place. The output is therefore not a presentation but a set of language the team can use daily.

Frequently asked

What separates brand strategy from logo design?

The logo is the brand’s signature; the strategy is what you are signing. Strategy defines who you speak to, on what concrete grounds you differ from competitors and in what tone you speak; the logo is its visual expression. Reversing that order produces a handsome mark whose meaning is unclear.

Does a small business need this?

The need depends on the number of decisions, not the size. However few of you there are, every week brings choices — should this image go out, should it be written in this tone. Strategy is what saves you from reasoning those out afresh each time, and in a small team the hours it saves show up faster.

Does it include finding a brand name?

Naming runs as a separate piece of work and can be added on request. Before proposing names we check availability on the domain and trademark side — bringing a name to the table that everyone likes but nobody can register saves no one any time.

How do you analyse competitors?

We look less at what competitors do and more at how they speak: which promises they lead with, what visual language they use, which questions they leave unanswered. The opening is usually not a service nobody offers, but a service everybody describes the same way.
